The Children’s Authority of Trinidad and Tobago is reminding parents and guardians to prioritize child safety as the July-August vacation begins. With the school year coming to a close on July 5, the Authority is stressing the importance of remaining vigilant and protecting children from abuse and harm during the holiday season.
In a news release on July 6, the Authority emphasized the need for adults to ensure children’s safety while engaging in leisure and fun activities. Encouraging parents and guardians to spend quality time with their children, the Authority also reminded the public that child protection is everyone’s responsibility.
During the vacation period, children may face increased vulnerability due to changes in routine and lack of proper supervision. Parents and guardians are advised to make appropriate arrangements for the care of their children during this time. For those attending camps or group activities, it is recommended to inquire about safety measures put in place by the organizers.
Teaching children about protecting themselves from abuse is crucial, along with maintaining open communication channels for reporting any incidents. Director Sheldon Cyrus emphasized the societal importance of safeguarding children, urging all individuals to report instances of abuse.
To ensure children’s safety, parents are advised to educate children on consent, monitor friendships, be aware of online activity, utilize non-physical forms of discipline, and address potential hazards at home. Road safety, emergency contact numbers, and water safety are also highlighted as important factors to consider.
