Meta took a step this week to address concerns about the accuracy of its AI labeling by announcing a change from “Made with AI” to “AI info” across its apps. This move came after people noticed the tag appearing on images where it didn’t belong, including a photo taken 40 years ago during a basketball game.

According to Meta spokesperson Kate McLaughlin, the update is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to improve its AI products and collaborate with industry partners on labeling practices. The new label aims to provide a more precise representation of content that has been modified with AI technology, rather than implying it was entirely AI-generated.

The issue seems to stem from how platforms interpret metadata applied by editing tools like Adobe Photoshop. Following Meta’s expanded AI labeling policies, real-life pictures shared on platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and Threads were mistakenly tagged as “Made with AI.”

McLaughlin revealed that the new labeling will first roll out on mobile apps before reaching web platforms. Once users click on the tag, they will see a detailed explanation similar to the old label, clarifying why it was applied and mentioning the possibility of AI-generated or AI-edited content, including tools like Generative Fill.

Although technologies like C2PA aim to simplify the differentiation between AI-generated and real images, that reality is still on the horizon.
