Big news in the world of virtual reality as Meta, formerly known as Facebook, may be phasing out the popular Meta Quest 2 headset permanently. This move signals the end of an era for mainstream VR, with the original Quest headset also taking a major step towards the digital graveyard.

Meta’s online stores worldwide have sold out of the Quest 2, except for the UK where the 128GB variant is still available for a bargain price of £199. With over 20 million units sold, the Quest 2 has become the most popular mainstream VR headset, surpassing Sony’s original PlayStation VR.

Existing Quest 2 owners are left wondering about ongoing support for their devices. It seems that support is already winding down, with new games being announced only for the upcoming Quest 3. Meta is likely to follow a similar pattern to the original Quest, cutting off hardware support at some point in the future.

But fear not, as Meta is expected to launch a budget-friendly version of the Quest 3, the Quest 3S or Quest 3 Lite, later this year. This newer model is likely to offer upgrades like a better processor and color passthrough without the hefty price tag of the standard Quest 3.

While Meta may want users to upgrade to newer models, they must tread carefully not to alienate their existing user base. The future of VR is exciting, and with new advancements on the horizon, virtual reality enthusiasts have much to look forward to.
